Well, evidently Tom Cruise isn't the only one who has gone off his nut in Hollywood. Over the weekend Mel Gibson's brain decided to call it quits.  Turns out, Mel likes to drink and drive really fast and when he gets pulled over, resist arrest and say things like “The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world,” but when he's sober he says, “I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable."  Ya think? I don't know about you, but when I've been drinking I don't say anti-semitic or any other kinds of despicable things.  I don't think like that therefore those kinds of sentences don't come out of my mouth and I think that holds true for most people.  I think Mel is going to find that most people will have a hard time believing him.

Unless you've been living in a cave or somewhere that is not Michigan, you've probably heard that Kid Rock and Pamela Anderson are getting married this weekend.   People have been trying to come up with a joint name for them ala Brangelina and TomKat.  On the radio this morning. a guy called in with Kid Rack.  I say we call them Kid Rock and Pamela Anderson - that would be a nice change for Hollywood.

Last night was our monthly book club get together. We started out with 7 people and we're down to 3.  Not complaining - it's just weird how that happens.  The 3 of us have a good time although we've become more about the food than the book.  Food is not a bad thing at all. Our most recent book selection, The Devil Wears Prada, was a good beach read but didn't really lend itself to discussion.  We did have good food last night. We went to The Blue Nile, an Ethiopian restaurant last night. Really good food but reaaaaaaallllly slooooooow service. I mean slow. I hate that - just come by the table more than once an hour. Please.  Our next book, if you want to read along, is The Stolen Child by Keith Donohue.

In the really icky category - Youtube has the video of He Who Must Not Be Named giving poor Chancellor Andrea Merkel of Germany a backrub.   As the caption on the video site states: "Bush displays his mastery of protocol in another cringeworthy moment in his overseas trip. When he tries to give Chancellor Merkel a backrub, she recoils from his touch as she would from a venomous snake."  No fool, that Chancellor, no fool.

President Dumbass (I stole that from PovertyBarn because it makes me laugh) vetoed the stem cell research bill. This is what he said about it "This bill would support the taking of innocent human life in the hope of finding medical benefits for others. It crosses a moral boundary that our decent society needs to respect. So I vetoed it."  And, get this, he said this with no hint of irony whatsoever. The fact that the man can even say things like "innocent human life" and "moral boundary" is amazing to me.  I'm pretty sure he laughs on the inside --  Haha, they're actually buying this shit.

If anyone is looking for a good read, I highly suggest Water for Elephants.  An elderly man, now in a nursing home, looks back on his life as a circus vet during the depression. One of the best books I've read in awhile.

Happy Bastille Day to all you Francophiles out there.  How sad that I had 3 years of French and a French-Canadian Grandpa and the only french I know is the words to Frere Jacques or I would have wished it to you appropriately.  Tomorrow Paige and I are doing the Bastille Day 5k, which should be fun but it starts at 8am and is in a town about an hour from where I live so it's going to be a really early morning.  I'm tired just thinking about it.  Yes, let's get up at 5:30am so we can go walk for 3 miles (there is a t-shirt involved and I'll do just about anything if there's a tee involved. Yes, 2 sad facts about me today).  Considering that it's supposed to be 95 degrees tomorrow, it's probably a good thing it's so early.  Have a great weekend and stay cool.

Kenneth Lay of Enron has died of a heart attack.  Boo hoo, NOT.

American V: A Hundred Highway's, Johnny Cash's posthumous release is out this week and I think it's fitting that we should listen to an American icon on the 4th.  If you liked American IV with the covers of "Personal Jesus" and "Bridge over Troubled Water", you'll like V.  I'm loving "If I Could Read Your Mind" and "God's Gonna Cut You Down".

In other music news - who the hell keeps giving Tommy Lee his own TV show? Stop already!

Have a safe and happy 4th!
